About Sheriff Andy Hughes

 

Sheriff Hughes is a lifelong resident of Houston County and career law enforcement professional. He has served the citizens of Houston County for the past 24 years. A second generation law enforcement officer, he started his career in 1986 at the age of eighteen as a dispatcher with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Hughes also served as a corrections officer, deputy sheriff and narcotics investigator. In 1990 he began working as a Dothan police officer.

 

While employed with the Dothan Police Department he was promoted to the rank of Corporal in 1992 and the rank of Sergeant in 1994.   He served as a supervisor in the narcotics division, patrol division and the special operations division. He also served as a law enforcement instructor and SWAT team leader. Hughes received many letters of commendation while serving with the Dothan Police Department. In 1995 he was recognized as Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for his work investigating and prosecuting major drug offenders. He was also recognized as One of Ten Outstanding Young Alabamians in 1995.

Sheriff Hughes is active in the community. He coaches several youth baseball teams and serves on the Board of Directors for the Dothan Southern League. 

He also serves on the Dothan/Houston County E911 Advisory Board, Wallace Community College Criminal Justice Advisory Committee, Child Advocacy Center Advisory Board, CrimeStoppers Board of Directors, and is a member of the Alabama Sheriff’s Association and the National Sheriff’s Association. Sheriff Hughes is an avid supporter of Special Olympics and has been involved in fundraising for the organization since 1988.


In June of 2006 Hughes qualified to run for the office of Houston County Sheriff. On November 7, 2006 he defeated a three term incumbent with 66% of the vote and was elected Sheriff of Houston County at the age of 39. Sheriff Hughes took office on January 16, 2007.


Sheriff Hughes has been married to his wife Eve for the past 12 years. They have 2 children, Caleb 10 and Joiner 8. The Hughes' live in rural eastern Houston County.
