Sheriff Andy R.
Hughes is the seventeenth sheriff to serve the citizens of
Houston County since its creation in 1903. The Houston County
Sheriff’s Office is a full service law enforcement agency
which serves approximately 100,000 citizens within the
county’s 587 square miles.

Sheriff Hughes is
responsible for the oversight of 173 employees including
command staff, sworn deputies, correctional officers,
dispatchers, civil division and administrative personnel.
Sheriff Hughes prepares and administers a yearly budget in
excess of 10.5 million dollars. He is a good steward of
public funds, and has always finished the fiscal year within
or under his prescribed budget. Sheriff Hughes’ duties also
include the management of the Houston County jail, which has
an average daily population of 483 inmates, and the security
of the Houston County courthouse. |
Sheriff Hughes
also serves as the Homeland Security Coordinator for Alabama
region 2 which encompasses ten counties in southeast Alabama.
Sheriff Hughes leads from the front. He routinely works in the
field with his deputies as well as other law enforcement
personnel throughout Houston County. Andy Hughes genuinely
cares about the community he serves and is an active
participant in many civic and community events.
